Although the Ryzen7-4800U is a mobile chip released more than 2 years ago, it is still mighty impressive, and benchmark scores told the story. There’s also 32GB DDR4 3200MHz dual-channel memory and a 500GB m.2 NVMe SSD in the unit that Beelink decided to send to me. The AMD Ryzen7-4800 processor that lives inside is based on the 7nm Zen2-based APU with 8 CPU cores, 16 threads, as well as an integrated Radeon Graphics GPU. This small beast may not pack the most modern AMD CPU, but it does give a punch where it’s needed. Sorry to say that it doesn’t have any Thunderbolt port, so if you’re into eGPU’s then it’s a bummer. Running multiple screens in a retail, commercial or corporate environment is one of the SER4’s strongest features. This means that it has the potential to drive three 4K displays at once. If you’re good at math, then you might have noticed that the SER4 comes with 3 HDMI ports. There’s also the ability to add a 2.5” SATA drive to the lid which is connected to the motherboard via a short ZIF cable.

There’s also a M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe Gen 3.0 SSD drive (the review model included a 500 GB Intel 660p drive with Windows 11 Pro installed). Internally there is an M.2 2230 WiFi 6E (or 802.11ax) Mediatek MT7921K card which supports the new 6 GHz band. The rear panel includes a gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.1 and a USB 2.0 port, dual HDMI 2.0 ports, and the power jack. The front panel has an illuminated power button, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a Type-C USB 3.1 port with Alternate Mode, dual USB 3.1 ports, and a reset pin-hole ‘CLR CMOS’. This small devil also comes with impressive connectivity options. If you have monitors in both your office and your apartment, this thing should be much easier than carrying a laptop. It weighs only 455g, so moving it around the house or taking it on a business trip will be easy. Thus making it completely disappear from the surroundings.

If you literally have no room on your desk, the VESA mount included in the retail box can help you attach the mini PC onto the back of the monitor. It measures 126*113*42 mm, so it can easily fit behind my Xiaomi curved monitor with no issues at all. It packs an excellent build quality, with no squeaky sounds at all. I will only do stuff with various v1 builds or github versions though, I dont use pre-v1 VCV at all now.As I previously mentioned, the SER4 comes in black with 2 red grilles on its side that help heat dissipate easily, and fully metallic chassis. If there is something useful I can do with this combo to inform other people, just let me know, I will have time to try things in the coming weeks.

I do not have a long and extensive history of using VCV rack, so I dont have any large patch files to use as benchmarks or any prior knowledge about what sort of performance to expect on various hardware.īut I do have an egpu for this machine, which I have not attempted to use when running VCV rack at all yet. eg on 12 threads I can get cpu usage showing 1115%, and with 6 threads I can get 522%. If I change engine thread options using the menu in VCV, I can get a lot of fan activity and some very large numbers. This is using the latest v1 build that was made available recently.īut I think those cpu stats are per core. On my 2018 Mac Mini with i7 and intel graphics, I get about 6% cpu use with a really completely empty rack, and around 33% when the rack is populated with the v1 default template. I think I’ll repeat my mantra: The right machine for Rack is desktop, desktop, desktop, with good cooling, and a Mac Mini is not really a desktop, more like a laptop squeezed into a different shape As Apple would say: Size is all that matters. Only to be done if someone insists on having MacOS I think. So: Doable, with an external GPU, but pricey and certainly far from an optimal bang-for-buck Rack machine.

If you really want a Mac, the Mac Mini 2018 is the best bang for the buck, by far.My own summary would be something like this:
